within the meadows and forests about this dominant peak. At 3618 meters Mount Assiniboine bears a striking resemblance to the Matterhorn in Switzerland. Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park was first established in 1922. In 1973 the boundary was expanded to 38,600 hectares filling a triangular space between Banff National Park to the east and Kootenay National Park to the west.

Wilderness scenery in the park is as beautiful as any found in the Canadian Rockies. - jagged peaks, shimmering lakes, glistening glaciers and sun dappled alpine meadows. Adjoining trails link the numerous lakes that dot the landscape.

A boreal forest of spruce intermixed with stands of alpine fir and lodgepole pine cover the lower elevations. In winter a few of the resident big games animals can be seen. These include moose, mountain goat and bighorn sheep. The gray jay, Clark’s nutcracker and white-tailed ptarmigan can be observed by skier/snowshoers foraging in the trees and meadows.

From December through April the high elevation of Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park acts a precipitation trap that turns the park into a winter wonderland. The open slopes and meadows beckon to skiers and snowshoers alike to come and explore. Trails to the favorite ski runs are skier tracked. Overnight powder provides a new trail breaking adventure each morning followed by the thrill of liking turns on the way down.

The overnight facilities add to ambience of Assiniboine. Our winter groups enjoy the private use of the four log Naiset Huts nestled into a grove of spruce on the east side of Magog Lake. The cabins are rustic with wood burning stoves and separate toilet facilities.

The experience of touring right from the door of your log cabin into the stunning Rocky Mountains is an adventure holiday you are sure not to forget.
