Day 2: Our Island Hopping itinerary begins with a 30 minute van shuttle south to launch at Playa Juncalito. Once loaded we will spend sometime introducing or refamiliarizing people with the various kayak strokes and maneuvers. Once comfortable we will follow the shore for a few kilometers before making a 45 minute crossing to Isla Danzante and find a camping spot at one of the many coves. The remainder of the day will be spent enjoying many options such as swimming, snorkeling, exploring the shoreline by kayak or just relaxing on the beach. It should not take you long to find the holiday you came for. From the beach, foot paths provide access to the higher ground where we can delight in the amazing vistas. The lofty peaks are perches to turkey vultures who can also be seen soaring to the heights. Down at the waters edge, brown pelicans will entertain everyone with their diving antics. When a school of fish are in the area we are also sure to see the intriguing blue-footed boobies who are determined not to be out done by their fishing mates.
Day 3: This could find us revisiting Day 2’s options or embarking on a course around Danzante. The east side is rugged with cliffs and caves. Colourful fish swim between massive blocks which have fallen from the cliffs above. A popular agenda has been to include a picnic lunch with snorkel gear.
Day 4-5: Rising early we will enjoy a hot drink and a light breakfast before making a short crossing to Isla Carmen. Another intriguing island, Carmen will provide a base for similar activities over the next few days. Numerous beaches with excellent snorkeling await. A rewarding morning excursion is a pre-dawn paddle out to Punta Baja to watch the sun rise over the open Sea of Cortez. Sea caves at another location are also a point of interest. In addition, we may be fortunate enough to be accompanied by a pod of surfacing bottle-nose dolphins. These friendly mammals will delight us with their graceful leaps and dives. Blue and Fin whales have also been spotted in this region.
Day 6: With an early morning start we will cross back to Isla Danzante and find a new beach to call home for our last night of camping. This will be your chance to spend some more time at what you have enjoyed most over the week or perhaps polishing off the lengthy novel you have been reading or just watching the sun coast across the clear blue sky. Lying close to the Tropic of Cancer our Baja sun sets about 6 pm. From Isla Danzante, our panoramic view to the west offers spectacular sunsets as the sun sinks behind the Sierra de La Giganta. On a clear night the over head sky is simply dazzling with stars. Undoubtedly our last night will find us with our new friends observing the stars and planets on a quiet beach.
Day 7: This will be our last day on the water. Following breakfast we will leave our island paradise and make the 45 minute crossing to Puerto Escondido. From here we will take a shuttle back to Loreto, where showers and the comforts of our hotel rooms await. On our last evening together, at one of Loreto’s finest Mexican restaurants, we will celebrate the events of the week.
Day 8: We can breakfast together and then consider some souvenir shopping and a tour of Loreto, including the magnificent Mission Nuestra Senora de Loreto built in 1697. From here, guests will depart at varying times depending on flight schedules or other plans you may wish to include. We would be pleased to assist if you wish to rent a vehicle for inland explorations of beautiful Baja.
