BAJA MEXICO SEA KAYAKING COASTAL EXPEDITION 9 DAYS 7 WATER DAYS LEG 1 |
|
9 Day Trip Itinerary |
| Day 1: Pre-trip meeting: 4 p.m. at Villas de Loreto.
Your guides will host an information meeting for the participants to introduce themeselves to one another
and receive final details on the trip and packing.
|
| |
| A social time will follow over
dinner at a local restaurant. |
| Day 2: Following breakfast we will load our van with kayak trailer and drive north along the transpeninsular highway to the town of Mulege, pop. 6,000.
Set about the mouth of an estuarial river this site supported one of Baja's first missions, Santa Rosalia De Mulege, built in 1705. Today the agricultural legacy of the Jesuit padres - dates, figs, bananas, olives and oranges - lives on with fishing and touriism to support the local economy.
After loading our kayaks we will follow the rugged coast south to a beach camp at Pta Gillito. This will put us in position for the next days' early crossing of the Bahia Concepcion.
|
| Day 3: This morning we rise early , eat a light breakfast and paddle
into the sunrise as we cross the mouth of the Bahia of Concepcion to Punta Santo Domingo. Rounding the tip of Punta Concepcion we will set a southerly course and with the wind follow it all the way to Loreto. This coast is the winter territory for large balleen whales such as the Blue and the Finn and the smaller Minke.
We will keep our eyes peeled for distant plumes of spray from their breathing holes. Camp will be found on the beach of a secluded cove.
|
| Day 4-6: By day 4 we will have found our
rhythem for the trip, rising with the pelicans each
morning and following them out onto the water, watching
them fish for their breakfast. To our left is open water
and the land where the sun comes from. To our right is
the shore stepping back to high and rocky ranges and
volcanic cones. The coast is punctuated with tall
promintories, sandy coves and beaches. As we pass rocky
outcroppings along the shore we will be greeted by more
brown pelicans and boobies resting in the sun while they
digest their catch. If the wind in favorable we'll stop
by mid-afternoon with time to hike and comb the shore
line from camp. Alternatively we could don our masks and
snorkles to explore the deeps or simply rest in the
shade of the camp tarp. Stopping points will include a
mix of named features such as Punta Santa Rosa, Punta
Colorado and Punta El Medano Blanca. There is the
occasional fish camp such as San Sabastan and San
Nicolas where we will stop to refill our water bags and
enjoy a soda. |
| Day 7:
This afternoon we will land on the familiar shores of
Isla Coronado, now an extinct volcano. The south tip is
rimmed with white sand beaches. Its slopes offer good
hiking through Sonoran desert vegetation on broken
volcanic rock. |
| Day 8:
With the view of Loreto in the distance we will push off
from shore for the last time and make our way back into
civilization, landing on the beach in front of Villas de
Loreto. Waiting will be a welcoming host, cool
refreashments, a comfortable bed and a hot shower. After
the sun has gone down we will walk into town and
celebrate our adventure with a tasty
meal. |
Day 9:
Over breakfast at Villas de Loreto we will enjoy fresh
fruit and baking and soak up the ambience of Loreto one
last time before packing our bags and checking flight
times for the return trip
home. |
