My experience is maintained by remaining the most active outfitter guiding on the Nahanni each summer. 2010 will be Nahanni Wilderness Adventure's 48th year on the river and my 22nd season as an outfitter/guide. Our history of river outfitting on the South Nahanni River dates back to 1962 when founder and pioneering outfitter Don Turner began outfitting and guiding river trips by scow up into the Nahanni's canyons from his family's homestead at Nahanni Butte. Don is the son of Nahanni legend and author Dick Turner who came to the Nahanni Region in the 1930's. Dick is best known for his two volumes, "Nahanni" and "Wings of the North" which feature the adventures of Dick and many others. In 1964 Don's company became incorporated as Nahanni Butte Outfitters.
In 1973 Don sold NBO to Greg and Fay Williams of Nanton, Alberta. Later the William's sold a branch of NBO, Nahanni Wilderness Adventures to David and Wendy Hibbard in 1992. David had been outfitting and guiding for the Williams since 1989.
Since that time David has become the Nahanni's most active outfitter on the river. In 2009 David guided his 56th descent of the Nahanni with a three whitewater canoe trip from the Moose Ponds with fellow guides Luke Hibbard and Karen Messenger. As a comparably smaller organization, we have found people prefer our outfitting services when they discover how closely we focus on their destination and travel expectations. Our selection of canoe, raft and kayak trips are accessible to people of just about all ages and abilities.
