Land of the Midnight Sun - Franklin's Legendary River
Legends of the mighty Coppermine are rooted in the journals of John Franklin and Samuel Hearne.
On the Coppermine you will experience first hand the beauty and majesty, which inspired the paintings of Robert Hood and George Back.
The river valley, rich in wildlife, flows in and out of the Barrens as it makes its way through steep-walled canyons and thrilling
rapids to the Arctic Ocean. The mystery and power of such famous sites as Rocky Defile, Escape Rapids and
Bloody Falls have made this rugged river a Canadian classic. Following a bush plane flight from Yellowknife, we will
start a 14-day descent from Hepburn Lake. The upper portion of the river is perfect for strengthening paddle
strokes and honing whitewater skills. At "Big Bend" the current picks up, moving quickly through deep powerful
rapids. Major sets will be scouted - sometimes portaged, sometimes shot - depending on water levels and group
interest. A day will be set aside to hike in the September Mountains before we complete our journey at the Inuit
community of Kugluktuk. Bring your fishing rod; the char and grayling are fantastic!
