You cannot rely on obtaining last minute items in the North. Do not bring external frame packs. Some extra baggage, and traveling clothes can be stored at your point of departure. Northern weather can change rapidly and one must prepare themselves accordingly. It is widely known that wool and synthetic fleece fabrics provide insulation even when wet.  Cotton, however, loses its insulating properties when wet and will actually draw heat away from your body through evaporation.  The careful selection of quality garments will enhance your enjoyment, especially in the case of early and late season departures on the more northern Rivers (e.g. Thelon River).
