WHITEWATER CANOE/HIKE TRIP FROM MOOSE PONDS HIKING TO THE CIRQUE OF THE UNCLIMBALES
Trip Itinerary
Arive in Fort Simpson one day prior to departure to
ensure readiness for an early morning charter flight and
to provide the opportunity for the guides to host a pre
trip meeting.
Charter flight to Moose Ponds. (weather permitting)
Our flight takes us north along the Mackenzie River, and
then inland over the foreboding Backbone Ranges,
offering breathtaking views of mountain scenery. Our
destination is The Moose Ponds at the base of Mount
Wilson. The picturesque ponds provide a delightful venue
for our first camp on the Nahanni
River.
Day 2
Provides an opportunity to explore the alpine
country of the continental divide between the Yukon and
Northwest Territories. This land is rich in wildlife
such as moose, caribou and trumpeter swans. An optional
hike up Mount Wilson may be planned.
Day 3-5
Leaving the Moose Ponds, we join the Nahanni flowing
as a stream; just over a canoe length in width. Over the
next 40 km the Nahanni swells to a formidable river,
tumbling through the boulder strewn "Rock Gardens". This
stretch offers some of the best whitewater canoeing in
the country.
Day 6-8
Paddling on, the down river
view is blocked by the massif of the Ragged Range.
Popular stops are the Island Lakes, Moore's cabin and
Moore's Hot Spring. Paddling through "The Gap" we pass
the east flank of the soaring Vampire Peaks and on
towards our trailhead at Britnell
Creek.
Day 9-
12: Today we begin an off river sojourn into
Glacier Lake to begin exploring the Ragged Range and its
renowned "Cirque of the Unclimbables". Our destination
will be the "Fairy Meadows" within the alpine Cirques.
Day 11 will be a rest day to watch for mountain
goats and soak up the alpine scenery from our base at
Fairy Meadows.
Day 13: Following our hike out
to the Nahanni from Glacier Lake we will load our canoes
and make a short paddle into Nahanni National Park to
camp on Rabbitkettle Lake.
Day 14: We will start with a relaxing moring lake
and recount the adventures of the past two weeks over
breakfast. There will be an opportunity to visit the
Rabbitkettle Hot Spring and Tufa Mound before our flight
back to Fort Simpson arives in the afternoon. Back in
town you will be treated to a celebration steak dinner
and a relaxing night at the reknown Bannocklands B &
B.
Day 15: Following a relaxing breakfast we will relax some more or explore town before
boarding our flight for home.
