  • The Flat (whitewater boiling) River Canoe and Kayak Expedition

Our Nahanni Watershed Rendezvous Expeditions with Nahanni Lite outfitting includes the headwater tributary the Flat (whitewater boiling ) River. Participants can join a two or a three week trip. The two week trip concludes with a flight back to our base from Virginia Falls. The three week trip goes beyond Virginia Falls and through the Nahanni River's three lower canyons, the Splits and the Laird River to Blackstone Territorial Park.

Participants have the choice of paddling a whitewater tandem or solo canoe and an inflatable kayak. The highlights of this trip include road access which makes the Flat River your most affordable Nahanni River trip. The Flat River is ironically named as it offers the most class 2 to class 3 whitewater of all the Nahanni's headwaters. Along the way we explore pristine mountain scenery, the Flat River Canyon known as The Cascade of Thirteen Steps and the historic points of the Nahanni Gold Rush. The two week trip concludes with a 20 km hiking excursion to explore Virginia Falls and the Fourth Canyon of the South Nahanni. After exploring the Falls those on the three week trip paddle through three grand canyons with camping and hiking at the Gate, Deadmen Valley and Lafferty's Canyon. The delightful waters of Kraus' Hot Spring are sure to sooth our tired trip muscles.

The Flat River whitewater canoe/kayak trip with Nahanni Lite outfitting appeals to active people who are looking for a cooperative, though guided, river tripping adventure where the group shares in camp chores with an interest in further developing skills in camp and on the water. Participants should be prepared for two to three weeks of wilderness camping, be reasonably physically fit and confident swimmers. They should be able to help portage personal and group gear on portages and their own pack during the exploration of Virginia Falls. Participants should be experienced whitewater canoeists for either tandem or solo canoes. Intermediate skills are required for inflatable kayaks. Wilderness camping experience is also required. This trip is led by experienced and qualified Nahanni River guides.
