The Little Nahanni River (Canoe/Kayak) and Cirque of Unclimbables Hiking Expedition
Our Nahanni Watershed Rendezvous program with Nahanni co-venture outfitting includes the headwater tributary the Little Nahanni River. This two week trip includes over 100k on the South Nahanni River and 4 days of hiking to explore the Cirque of the Unclimbables and Glacier Lake area.
Participants have the choice of paddling a whitewater tandem or solo canoe and an inflatable kayak. The trip is supported by a guide in a load bearing cata-raft. The highlights of this trip are many. Starting with a mini trip along the Alaska Highway through the northern Rockies, Muncho Lake, Liard Hot Springs and Watson Lake, road access makes our Little Nahanni River Expeditions one your most affordable options for the Nahanni River. The trips environmental footprint (CO2 emissions) is less than half that of using a chartered float plane to access the river. Flowing north from a pristine alpine lake the Little Nahanni River tumbles its way through the Selwyn and Logan Mountains making a big arc for 85 kilometers to the northeast and the junction with the South Nahanni River. The Little Nahanni offers superb whitewater paddling for most of its duration and is considered more challenging than the 'Rock Gardens' of the South Nahanni. Upon entering the South Nahanni the flow takes us around the majestic Ragged Range and down past the towering Vampire Peaks. At Britnell Creek's we'll store away our boats and make the 10k hike to Glacier Lake. The remainder of the trip will be spent exploring a spectacular mountain area known as the Cirque of the Unclimbables and the pristine Fairy Meadows. The trip concludes with a flight from Glacier Lake to the shuttle van at Flat Lake and the return trip to Fort Nelson.
The Little Nahanni River Expedition appeals to active people who are looking for a cooperative, though guided, river tripping adventure where the group shares in camp chores and holds an interest in further developing skills in camp and on the water. Participants should be prepared for two weeks of wilderness camping, be reasonably physically fit and confident swimmers. They should be able to help portage personal and group gear. Participants should be experienced whitewater canoeists for either tandem or solo canoes. Intermediate skills are required for inflatable kayaks. Wilderness camping experience is also required. This trip is led by experienced and qualified Nahanni River guides.
